If you think about Spanish riding, you might see a muscular white stallion in a very collected piaffe!  Also, when you look at Juan Romero Mancera’s Facebook page, you see a lot of collected work! But unlike those who have given Spanish trainers the rumour of fast training of horses to come to piaffe and passage at an early stage, Juan’s main focus is basic work and he emphasise the importance of giving the horse lots of time to develop and become strong. So those who came here to watch fancy movements might have been disappointed! The focus in all the lessons was good basic work! But we can also view it from the opposite side! Several riders that does not have Iberian horses did not dare to ride in the course, for fear of not being good enough! But I later heard them comment that they could have participated and that this is exactly what their horses would need. So for all of you who regret that you didn’t participate, I can please you by announcing that Juan will come back here in September 2020! Then you have your chance!

What I write here is my own interpretation of how Juan is training horses. He doesn’t always say that we should use a certain exercise to achieve a certain thing. Instead he guides each rider through different exercises that improves the movements of the horse. So all the theoretical descriptions below are my own, based on a combination of my knowledge and what Juan rewarded during his lessons.

What is basic?

It is easy to say that the basic work is very important with all horses! But if you compare different riders they will probably do their basic work in very different ways. To know what basic work the horse need you first need to know what you want to achieve with the basics! You can always use all these fancy words to describe the purpose of the basic work, like strengthening the upper line of the horse, get the horse more suppled and improve the horse’s balance. We can all agree on these words, but they mean different things for different riders. To get guidance for how to train the horse, you need to be much more concrete. Juan doesn’t seem to be a friend of fancy words. Instead he focus on what he wants to achieve in the horse and how he can achieve that!

If I should sum up Juans goals with the basic work I would say:

  • Not to restrict he movements from the front
  • Increase the impulsion in the hind legs

The most common problem in riding today is probably that horses get compressed in their necks and that they leave their hind legs behind. If you compress the horse in the front the hind legs will inevitable be pushed backwards or to the side. To be able to get good impulsion in the hind legs you need to give the horse freedom in the front, but it should be a controlled freedom. You don’t get impulsion by letting the horse rush, by allowing the horse to get tensed above the hand or by letting the horse go deep on the forehand. You must channel the energy to be able to improve the impulsion by driving the hind legs more forward!

How do you do this?

You basically do this by releasing the reins more and driving the horse more forward. This sounds very simple, but if you do it the wrong way the horse will only increase the speed, push more with the hind legs and get tension in the back muscles.

Avoid rushing

The first problem that most rider’s will face is that the horse start to speed up when you release the reins more and drive the horse forward. When that happens you need to control the horse. You do that with the reins (equally on both reins so that you don’t increase the bending in the neck). Immediately when the horse slows down you have to release again. You should release more than you probably are used to, but you should never totally loose the connection. If the horse wants to rush, you can use circles and serpentines to control the speed.

In the beginning you have to accept that the rhythm increases. Especially with a horse that is not used to take the legs forward, the strides might stay short and the horse tries to go more forward by increasing the rhythm. This is not the reaction you want, but instead of slowing the horse down to decrease the rhythm, you should give the horse some time to figure it out by himself. The first day, several horses on the course did this, but before the course was over they all had a slower rhythm and longer strides.

For me, who are used to help the horse more, it felt almost like I was abandoning the horse in the beginning. But I fully understand why I should wait for the horse to find the solution, because then I will get a horse with so much more stability who is less dependant on the rider.

Suppleness

To get impulsion instead of pushing you need the horse to be suppled. Juan create suppleness by working on circles and serpentines. With most horses the circles need to be large and you should have the feeling of increasing the circle rather than decreasing it. This will engage the inside hind leg more. It is important to keep the neck straight to avoid pushing the horse out on the outside shoulder. Juan doesn’t use side movements until the horse is already connecting to the hand with good impulsions in the hind legs.

When you get the horse suppled on for example circles, you can continue on straight lines such as the long side or the diagonal to increase the stride length more. Before you loose the suppleness you should return to the circle. This also apply to the canter work. You start on the circle. When the horse start to find the balance and rhythm on the circle you ride straight on the long side and then you go back to the circle to restore the balance.

The hand can also create suppleness. You should not try to lower the horse’s head and get into a deep position, but the horse need to feel suppled in the reins. What you do is that when the horse get tensed on the reins or pushing against the reins you close your fingers and wait a moment. When the horse reacts with suppleness you open your fingers again so that you have a really soft rein contact.

Don’t bend the neck

If you bend the horse’s neck you will also restrict the movements. To be able to increase impulsion, the energy have to go straight through the horse. This will be impossible if you bend the neck. Therefore don’t try to bend the uneducated horse on the long sides of the riding arena. Instead you should make sure that the base of the neck and the chest are aligned. When you turn, try to do it with the legs instead of turning with the reins. Never pull on the inside rein when turning. Instead you should always release the inside rein when you turn the horse.

Don’t restrict the back muscles

When you start to work with increasing impulsion, it is common that the legs have more activity than the back of the horse. The horse does not let the movements come through. In trot horses have more back movements than in walk. Therefore it is important not to restrict the movements in the back in trot. Therefore it is easier for the horse to let the movements come through in rising trot. In rising trot you can also help the horse a little with the rhythm.

When the movements are coming through more in trot you can try some sitting trot, but if the trot is still uncomfortable or if the horse get restricted in sitting trot you go back to rising trot.

Transitions between gaits

Different gaits will have different effects in the horse. Walk will usually increase the calmness in the horse and a good walk will also bring the horse’s shoulders more forward. Trot is usually the most effective gait to create impulsion in the hind legs and canter can with many horses increase inte roundness over the back. By doing transitions between the gaits you can use the benefits from the different gaits and bring them to the other gaits.

Transitions from walk to trot should be calm, but yet energetic. Transitions from trot to walk should be prepared by good impulsion and you should drive the horse forward into walk and release the reins. Always prepare the transition from trot to canter with good impulsion. Then try to do the transition calmly and don’t surprise the horse with the transition. To go from rising trot to sitting trot with retained impulsion is a good way to prepare the horse for the canter. When you go from canter to trot you should always drive the horse forward to retain the impulsion in trot as fast as possible.

Transition within gaits

When the horse has started to let the movements go through the body and softly connect to the rider’s hands, he is ready for lengthening the gaits. You prepare the lengthening with impulsion and softness and you should try to lengthen the strides instead of increasing the rhythm. After that you return to the working gait with impulsion. In the beginning it can be a good idea to prepare in the working gait on a circle, lengthen on one long side and then go back to working gait on a new circle at the next short side.

Side movements

According to my impression, Juan doesn’t use the side movements to lengthen the neck, increase the impulsion of the hind legs and to get the movements through the horse. Instead, when you already have achieved this, you use the side movements to increase the control over the shoulders and hind legs and to prepare the horse for collected work. When you do side movements you should try to keep the rhythm in the gait and keep the impulsion from behind. Always make sure you can position the shoulders and the hind legs in the movement.

Piaffe

Juan put great importance to the transition in to piaffe and out of piaffe. In the beginning you should only keep the piaffe for a few strides, and then slowly ride the horse forward in collected trot. Make sure you keep the control over the shoulders and hind legs that you have gained from the side movements. You should keep the horse exactly in between a shoulder in and a quarter in.

If the horse has to little elevation in the forehand in piaffe, you can teach the horse the Spanish walk and use a tiny bit of these movements to increase elevation. You can also use Spanish walk to get the front legs more forward in piaffe, if you have a horse that wants to do piaffe with the front legs backwards. In that case it is important that you reward the forward movement in the front legs when you teach the Spanish walk, and not only the lift. You need to teach the horse to always put the front legs down a tiny bit in front of the body.

Passage

Don’t do too much when you teach the horse the passage. Think about it as a forward going piaffe with a little more trot movement in the body. Then the passage will come naturally, instead of becoming mechanical.

How can I combine this with the core stability riding?

If you drive the horse more forward, the importance of directing the energy straight through the horse increase. If the energy goes over one of the shoulders, the more you drive the horse forward, the more weight the horse will push over to that shoulder. When you stabilise the core in the horse, you get the whole body of the horse more centered and the horse start to lift the chest. Core stability in the rider gives a tool to keep the horse centered and the energy straight. It also reduces the exaggerated push from the hind legs. Therefore, by improving the core stability, you will get better effect when you increase the impulsion from the hind legs of the horse and release the reins.

The effect from increasing the impulsion from the hind legs and avoid restricting the forehand of the horse is not only that the energy increase. The most important effect is the more lifted posture in the horse’s body that it creates. You ride the horse from behind and push the hind legs more forward. This should make the whole hind quarter being more ”connected” in the way that the hind legs are lifted earlier and put down more forward. This pushes the whole body of the horse forward so that the body feels shorter and the base of the neck longer. It is not a stretching exercise as in going forward and down. Instead it increases the connection, the lift and the throughness in the horse. On the way to this position the horse might speed up and increase the rhythm. Then he will of course not be able to activate the core muscles. But when you get the horse into the right position he will start to break more with the hind legs and less with the front legs. It will therefore be easier to both get the lift in the chest and the throughness of the movements. In this position the rhythm will reduce and the horse will easier activate its core muscles.

Frihetsdressyr

I frihetsdressyr måste hästen förstå tre saker.

Ligga

Tidigare lärde Rebecca in ligga från buga.

  1. Lukta i sanden
  2. Gå sakta på liten volt

Background

Jean Luc comes from the classical school Cadre Noir of Samour in France. The classical theory is based of what riders thought a long time ago, and what has become the tradition in riding. But new science has shown that many of these theories are not correct! One example is the swinging back.

Our ancestors were not wrong. They were good riders, but they explained what they felt in riding according to that times knowledge. And since we now has more knowledge we need to question the classical theories.

Jean Luc is now going through several dressage movements, for example half pass and piaffe. For each movement he is comparing the classical explanation of that movement with todays knowledge according to science. This shows how wrong the classical masters really were. If we keep on following the theories of the classical masters, we will ride our horses wrong.

The principle of training have been obedience. That is completely wrong. Horses wants to work with us. They only need the guidance to do it correct. You need to teach the horse to move in a way where they use more eccentric contraction (instead of concentric contraction) and elastic strain energy. Then the horse can work with less effort. When the horse feels this he will start to search for that movement. The problem is that all horses protect their tensions and the way they are used to move. Every horse will protect their problems. Therefore all horses will make misstakes. You need to analyse the misstakes and guide the horse to find a solution in the right direction. Submission will not solve this. Instead we need to encourage them to try a new solution.

The biomechanics of the horse

In 1964 the first study was made about the vertebra column of the horse. It shows that the thrust from the hind legs will travel thru the spine, vertebra by vertebra, and the back muscles can convert that into an horisontal and an upward force. That study did not get much attention.

By this time, the general opinion was that the bow and string concept was correct. That means that the muscles in the upper line should be suppled to allow to be lengthened by activating the abdominal muscles.

”I think it is evident now that in certain respects the first approach to the physics of cosmical plasmas has been a failure. It turns out that in several important cases this approach has not given even a first approximation to truth but led into dead-end streets from which we now have to turn back.” (Greg Hummel 1970) In the same way we need to turn our back to equine classical theories, such as the bow and string concept, driving with the seat etc. These theories are wrong. That is not the way it works.

In space research, the magnetosphere and interplanetary space, which are near the Earth, where supposed to be void and structureless. We know now that they are filled with plasmas and magnetic fields. As well, we know now that the thoracolumbar spine is not a set ot tendons and ligaments kept under tension by the string. Instead, the equine thoracolumbar spine is a complicated network of muscles, tendons and fascia, functioning differently than previously believed.

Tensegrity, elastic energy, forces transport, closed kinematic chains are the new words of classical equitation. They are the fundamental components of equine gaits and athletic performances. They cannot be forced, submitted or disciplined. They can be processed in the horse brain, through a dialogue upgraded to the very high and very refined horse perception.

Tempi change

In tempi change the horse does not engage the hind legs much. The hind legs does not go in front of the vertical. Instead the tempi change helps the horse to store more elastic energy. In the right canter the left side resist and store elastic energy and vice verse. You need to ask for the first two changes, then you should just sit without moving and the horse will use the elastic energy to repeat the changes.

Muscle tone and supplement

Every time a hind leg push it will create an oblique force working on the vertebra column. The muscles must resist this force. The whole horse is built in the same way. In the legs all the joints have tendons and muscles that need to resist the impact force when the horse is moving, other ways the impact force will damage the joint. To stay sound the horse need a certain muscle tone. Therefore supplement is not the solution.

Straightness

There is no such thing as straightness in the horse. When the horse is moving there are always a slight bending to the left and to the right, that causes the shoulders and the hind legs to move a little sideways. Straightness means making these sideways movements smaller and to narrow the corridor. With your back muscles and your upper thigh you control the shoulders of the horse and with your calfs you control the hind legs of the horse. The perception of the horse is very high. Therefore you should never squeeze with your calfs. The stirrups helps you to hold your calfs in the right position. You only need to touch the horse gently, you don’t need any force. And you should never squeeze with your thighs. You should place your thighs in balance on the horse. But the horse need to be able to widen the chest, and that is impossible if the rider is squeezing.

Flexion and bending

Flexion creates a small movement between the vertebras. So does the bending and the rotation. The movements are not exactly the same, but they are very similar. And they are created with the same muscles. Therefore flexion will make bending and rotation easier. And bending and rotation will make flexion easier.

The push from the hind leg creates a force. That force need to be channelled by the rider and the horse. When the right hind leg push the force goes diagonally to the left. If the rider follow that force to the left the horse will follow and rotate to the left. Instead the rider should resist that force and stay balanced in the middle. Therefore the rider need to create a corridor with it’s back muscles, it’s seat, thighs and calfs. The whole body of the rider will be involved to guide the force in the right direction. This is a constant dialog with the horse. The force will be changed every half second, and therefore also the riders muscle tone need to change every half second. Therefore a good posture can’t do this work. It must be a constant dialog.

Stabilising system of the vertebral column during movements. ”The reflex contraction of the spinal column muscles compensate for the bending of the spinal column” (Ober J. K. 1974).

This is a characteristic behaviour of the spine stabilising system during movements. The findings contradict theories pretending that lateral bending stretches the muscles situated on the outside of the bend. Dr. Betsy Uhl DVM, PhD, DAVCP explains how the force generated by the propulsive hind leg acts obliquely on the thoracolumbar spine. The thrust generated by the hind leg has to be resisted by the muscles situated on the opposite side of the spine to create movement. The same principle applies to lateral bendin.

Frequency and cadens

If the horse go faster than a certain frequency the horse will not be able to store enough elastic energy to create an upward push. Therefore with a slower frequency will make it possible for the horse to create greater movements.

The seat

When you sit on the horse you are always on the two seat bones, the glute and the upper thighs. Both your posture and your muscle tone will differ thou, depending on which muscles you engage. Simplified we can say that the superficial muscles are responsible for creating movements in your body and the deep muscles are responsible for posture and change in muscle tone. To be able to get a neutral seat you need to learn how to engage your deep muscles. Then you can start to play with making changes in muscle tone, to tone up with your horse and get the same tensegrity.

The classical seat

The stability over the seat bones is assisted by:

  • The glutes
  • The upper thighs muscles
  • Transversal Spinalis
  • Abdominal muscles
  • Pectoral muscles
  • Muscles of the cervical-thoracic area
  • Back of the thighs muscles
  • The calf

Saddles that support the rider

Saddle makers tried to improve the look by pushing the glutes forward with high cantle and keeping the thighs in place with oversized thigh blocks. They improved the look but not the function. The rider’s body weight acts from back to front hampering proper function of the horse’s back muscles and increasing the load on the forelegs. The thighs push upward in the oversized blocks.

Also resulting from slackness of the glutes and artificial support of the high cantle, some riders collapse the vertebral column rounding the whole spine.

Some riders collapse even further, lifting the upper thighs in the oversized thighs blocks, bending the knees and losing stability of the lower legs. The legs instability creates chaotic stimuli in the horse’s side,  where the horse does have a very high tactile perception.

If the glute are not strong enough, the result is that the rider has a posture that looks alright, but it is working in the wrong way.

If the body weight is acting back to front, the body weight alter the function of the back muscles. That creates the wrong dynamic.

A saddle that place the rider don’t allow good riding. Instead the saddle should allow the rider to find the right place.  The stability of the rider’s seat is based on the tone of the glutes, psoas and other muscles, and therefore, a saddle allowing such tone.

The neutral balance – the vertical seat

If the weight is too much forward, the horse will shift backward – down (the front legs are pushed backward down). If the weight is too much backward, it pushes the horse forward – down. Do not push your heels down, since that pushes your weight back.

The vertical line of the rider is the key. Body weight can act consciously or not, the horse responds anyway. Precise position gives you the ability to orchestrate the horse.

The neutral balance, which is the body coordination where there is not back to front shift of the rider’s weight, demands advancing a little more the Anterior Superior iliac Spine (ASIS)

You should never act back to front or front to back. To manage this you must place yourself in a totally vertical position.

  • The gluteus muscles
  • The psoas
  • The muscles of the upper thighs
  • Transversus Spinalis muscles
  • Abdominal muscles
  • Cervical-thoracic muscles
  • The calf

As you can see it is mostly the same muscles that the rider uses in the neutral seat as in the classical seat, but the posture is not exactly the same. You have to advance your pelvis. Properly tuned, the whole muscular system allows a neural balance where the front part of the shoulders, the middle of the spine, the seat bones and the stirrups are on the same vertical line. The rider can then orchestrate the horse’s subtle nuances in muscle tone.

The middle of the spine is the center of the rider’s rotation. It is exactly between the last thoracic vertebra and the first lumbar vertebra. If any of these points are in front of or behind the line, you will disturb the balance between the diagonally  back muscles in the horse.

To coordinate the horse’s physique

We must figure out how the horse’s body must be shaped to be able to perform the movement.

The art of riding is to educate and coordinate the horse’s physique for the athletic demand of the performance. To make the horse perform different movements are not the difficult thing. The difficult thing is to coordinate the muscles of the horse in the right way to be able to do the movements in the correct way. Without this coordination, the movements will create strain on the horse and eventually the horse will be injured.

It is much easier to use force than brain (Etienne Beudant, 1866-1949)

Influence your horse with muscle tone, not aids

The horse obey to the aids we are using. Instead of giving aids we should just change the tone. Act like you are moving, but don’t move. Only change the tone in your muscles. To be able to do this you need to explore your own body. The tensegrity of the rider must match the tensegrity of the horse. If it matches the horse will react. Therefore the horse will give the rider feed back and tell the rider when the seat is correct.

If you change the tone of your body and the horse does not respond, analyse the reason. Maybe you are in front of or behind the neutral posture. Or maybe something else is disturbing the energy floating thru the rider into the horse. Even if you have what looks like the right posture, it doesn’t have to be correct. In this posture there are gradations. Every rider need to find the level of precision of body control to be able to play with these gradations. Yes, it is subtle and gentle, but it is possible to do.

The placement of the saddle

We are usually told that the saddle should be placed behind the Trapezius muscle. But if you remove the top layer of muscles you will see that the trapezius goes far back on the horse. So does the latissimus dorsi. You can’t place the saddle that far behind.

Influence the back muscles of the horse

You need to remove 4 layers of muscles before you reach the muscles that coordinates the spine. Therefore these muscles are not activated by pressure, instead they are activated by movement.

There are actually two different longissimus muscles, it is on dorsal muscle and one ventral muscle. These together with the multifidus muscle are protecting and stabilising the horse’s spine. This system of diagonally muscles makes a complex coordination of the horse’s back and are able to convert the forward thrust into an upward force and an horisontal force.

When this coordination is working you will feel it. If it is not working, you must find out how to help the horse to find a better way to coordinate the back muscles.

If there is a disturbance (such as a seat working back to front or a hand restricting the neck), the horse will protect himself and resist.

If you follow the movements that the legs of the horse is creating, you will move more than the spine is created to move. Then the horse need to protect himself from the movements of the rider. Instead the rider need to minimise the movements in the rider’s body to match the movements in the horse’s back. This creates an equitation where the rider barely move. Then it will be possible for the horse to react of gradations of muscle tone in the rider.

It is not the muscles that move the leg. The muscles create tension on the tendons and the tendons move the leg. Therefore you always need to prepare the horse and give the horse time to coordinate the body in the right way. When the body is ready the horse can perform the transition.

It is one cm in difference between the seat bones for a woman and a man. The pelvis of the woman (left) is wider, but most men are bigger than women. Therefore the different is so small.

You need to be in the middle of the saddle. You should place yourself on top of your seat bones. There will always be a curvature in the spine, but it should be almost straight. If you collapse the S-shape will be too big and the center of the spine will be behind the seat bones. The movements in the spine will also be too large. With too much S-shape the interior part of the disc will be compressed. The fascia should separate the vertebras in the spine. But with an exceeded  S-shape in the spine, the fascia will not function properly.

If you want to get a reaction from the horse by increasing the tone of your muscles and you don’t get that reaction. Don’t continue to do the same thing. Change a little. Do more, do less, change the posture, use the tone in different muscles etc. But don’t expect to get a different reaction by continuing doing the same thing. If you succeed, you are going to get more and more results by doing less and less.

The whole body need to be in balance for the rider to become neutral

The seat bones are two points around which the pelvis can oscillate back to front and front to back.

The rider need to find the right coordination in the:

  • Gluteus muscles
  • Psoas
  • Muscles of the upper thigh
  • Abdominal muscles
  • Back muscles
  • Pectoral and cervical muscles

Gluteus

Stability is created by the muscular system surrounding the pelvis. That contains of the gluteus system:

  • Gluteus Maximus
  • Gluteus Medius
  • Gluteus Minimus

The gluteus muscles should not be contracted, but not totally relaxed. You need some tone in the gluteus. If the rider does not resist enough with the gluteus the rider will fall backwards.

The psoas

If we contract it a little it will help us to become straight. If we contract it too much the back will become arched.

The muscles of the upper thigh

You should advance the Anterious Superius Iliac Spine (ASIS) forward. This will keep the rider’s seat forward in the saddle without tilting the pelvis forward and arching the back.

The abdominal muscles and the back muscles

Everything we do with the abdominal muscles must also be done with the back muscles. You always need to find a balance between the front and the back.

Pectoral and cervical muscles

You will never function properly in the thoracic area if the cervical muscles are not engaged properly.

Sit behind the middle of the saddle

In many instances, riders sit further back on the saddle (behind the middle). There are also a lot of saddles that place the rider to far backwards. This will increase the back to front effect. Even if the rider is supported by high cantle and oversized thigh blocks, the body weight is acting back to front when the rider sit to far back.

Some riders compensate this. It can be done in different ways:

  • Arching the lumbar spine and shifting the shoulders back.
  • Collapse the whole spine.

This put strain on the vertebra discs. Between the attraction of gravity pulling downward and the upward forces coming from the limbs and thoracolumbar spine, the rider intervertebral discs, if unprotected by muscle tone, tendons and fascia, are under intense compressive forces. This is the reason that many riders get back problems. The fascia are supposed to separate the vertebras, which will take the strain away from the discs. Therefore we need a certain tone.

This seat with an arched lumbar spine and the shoulders back or a total collapse of the whole spine is the hardest falt in the seat to correct. The rider are probably not aware of the problem. It’s a seat where the rider does not use any effort. The rider need to learn to become taller and start to use more muscle tone.

Some riders collapse the spine without shifting the pelvis backward. They remain too far back on the glutes and the body weight is acting back to front.

High cantle pushing the glutes forward and oversized thigh blocks forcing the thighs backward induce arching of the lumbar area.

The neutral seat

A lot of the problem we have in our horses is caused from the fact that we does not sit on the right place. Therefore we create a force that the horse act on. Then we need to compensate that with more reins and legs. The only way to get lightness is to always ride with loose reins and with neutral seat. We don’t have to be perfect in our bodies. But we need to find a seat where we are neutral to the horse. Therefore every rider have to find its own way to become neutral. Therefore different riders might need different muscle tone, and different riders need to engage different muscles. It is not the posture that is important. It is the coordination. It doesn’t have to look a certain way. It has to be effective.

Advancing the ASIS places the rider in neutral balance where the body weight is not acting back to front or front to back. The best way to do this (especially for women) without arching is to advance the ASIS together with the sternum (open the chest).

Harmonic tensegrity occurs at the level of biotensegrity. Stephen Levin describes how every part of an organism, from the molecular to the gross anatomy, is integrated by a mechanical system into a complete functional unit. You can never separate a single body part. A change in one part of the body will always influence other parts of the body. To be able to communicate with the horse, the aids are not enough. You need to use your interior body and your balance to be able to communicate with your horse.

We can describe the gross lines of the rider’s position, but the seat is not a posture. The seat is a body coordination, proper to each individual. The seat involves the rider’s whole body where numerous nuances in muscle tone occur simultaneously but within an overall integrity. The seat is a conversation guiding the horse mental processing to the body coordination optimally adapted to the athletic demand of the performance.

Forces acting on the seat

The seat cannot be in balance if it is disturbed by any shift of the rider weight or any lateral and/or transversal shift of the saddle. Forces, such as upward forces, are constantly acting on the rider’s body. There are a lot of forces just in front of the riders seat and just behind the riders seat, acting upward. That might feel like a swinging back, but it is mostly forces created by the horse’s legs and the vertebral column. If the rider relax his back and follow this force, the horse need to protect himself from the movements in the rider. Therefore, the more relaxed the rider is, the more the horse need to tense his back.

The lateral bending and rotation

The rotation creates the lift

The horse is not lifting its trunk straight upwards. It lifts the trunk with the rotation. This can be a stepwise lift between the left and right side of the horse. So a tiny rotation to the left will lift the right side of the horse a little, then a tiny rotation to the right will lift the left side of the horse a little and so on.

There are two ways to create rotation.

  • By bending the thoracic spine
  • By engaging the inside hind leg.

Each horse will prefer one of the ways. Always start with the approach that the horse prefer. When it starts to work, use also the other one.

The rider’s seat creates the rotation

Lateral bending occurs between T9 and T16. Transversal rotation between T9 and T14. Therefore the lateral bending and rotation occur between the rider’s upper thighs. If the rider sit too far back, the horses trunk will not be between the rider’s upper thigh. The integrity of the whole body of the rider is involved.

A twisted or bended spine

If the rider bends the spine, he will create a force pushing the horse laterally. The same problem will occur if the rider compensates for inverted rotation of the horse’s thoracic spine and/or a shift of the saddle by bending the vertebral column.

If the spine is twisted, you will never get the right reaction in the horse. Therefore the shoulders, the pelvis, the upper thighs and the arms of the rider need to face in the same direction.

If the rider turns the shoulders and/or the head to the right but keeps the pelvis straight, the horse will likely keep going straight. The twist of the rider’s spine will alter the integrity of the rider’s body.

The twist of the rider’s upper body to the right will also shift the seat bones toward the left stimulating inverted rotation. On the picture, inverted rotation is also created by excessive bending of the horse neck.

Influence the chest with the upper thigh

It is the upper thigh that will influence the chest of the horse. The lower thigh will only act on the ribs, and you can not do anything on the ribs. Therefore it is the upper thigh you need to use to create the rotation. Don’t squeeze with the lower thigh. But the calf should always touch the horse.

The use of the lower thigh and the calf

An error that hampers the rider’s integrity and alters the clarity of the conversation with the horse, is squeezing the lower thighs above the knees, moving the lower legs away from steady contact with the horse’s flanks.

If the rider squeeze with the lower thigh, this might cause the lumbar spine to arch. Also the contrary can occur, that an excessive arching of the lumbar vertebrae causes the lower thigh to squeeze. The defect tends to move the lower legs away from the horse’s flanks. This creates a problem of instability in an area of very high tactile perception. From this leg position, the rider either has to squeeze the legs, in order to touch intermittently with the calf. In both cases, the horse is disturbed by excessive pressure of the chaotic stimuli of intermittent contact.

Using stimuli developed for gauging human tactile sensitivity on the part of the horses body which would be in contact with the rider’s leg is greater than what has been found for the adult human calf or even the more sensitive human fingertips. Horses can react to pressures that are too light for the human to feel (C. A. Saslow, 2002)

Horses deemed insensitive to the leg (deadsided) may simple have never had the chance to respond to consistent, light, meaningful signals. Similarly, the seeming ability of a well-trained horse to ”have extrasensory perception” for its rider’s intentions, may be instead its response to slight movements or tightening of muscles that the rider makes without awareness. (Saslow, 2002)

You need to have contact with your upper thigh and your calf. The stirrups will help you to keep your calf in contact. Don’t press, just let it stay in a constant contact.

Squeezing the lower thighs above the knees also alter the accuracy and stability of the rider’s seat. The rider’s body rotates around the knees lifting the seat of the saddle.

The use of the hands

The rider’s hands are not there to control the horse but to feel the horse’s thoughts. The forearm need to be soft. The tone of the arm need to be very low.

”The rider’s body should be advanced toward the hands and not the hands pulled back toward the body.” (Nuno Oliviera)

Instead, the equitation of the driving seat, rushes the horse on the forehand, increasing the weight on the bit and the rider holds back pulling on the reins.

Lightness is not the bit. Lightness rests on the rider’s stability, controlled motion and balance. The rider entire muscular system is involved in teaching the horse advanced body control. Only the stability of the seat, abdominal and back muscles, allows the freedom of the shoulders and the softness of the arms, elbow and forearms.

Compressing the base of the neck

The vicious circle: The rider’s seat is driving the horse on the forehand. The horse responds pushing down and forward on the bit. The rider pulls back. The forearms are tense, elbow and arms are contracted and the shoulders are locked.

Between the driving seat and the pulling action on the reins, the compression of the facets between C5, C6 and C7 is likely to create damages.

The flexion of the poll should actually be created by a lift in the trunk which lifts the base of the neck and push the cervical vertebra forward and the poll get flexed.

By contrast, if the flexion of the poll is asked at the level of the poll, the flexion will lead to a contraction, which creates a backward force and a restriction in the base of the neck.

C6-C7 easily come under stress. The hind legs push forward and the poll restricts backward. That places the C6-C7 under stress. At the picture you see how C6 can become deformed due to this stress. It shows an enlarged facet resulting from abnormal stress.

The nuchal ligaments has one structure between C2 and the poll and another structure between C2 and the wither. Therefore the line of function of the nuchal ligament is not from the vertebra to the poll, it is actually from the vertebra to C2.

The equestrian literature wrongly advises ”taking contact”. Taking suggests pulling, acting backward the hands moving back or acting backward toward the body. If the horse is pushing toward the hand you might have to resist. But if you act backward you will cut the movement.

The hands can eventually stay still or moving forward toward the bit, never toward the rider’s body. Staying still induces the concept of resistance, which must not be a wall, but instead a filter. Elastic stiffness is how muscles work. Elastic but not loose. The equestrian literature uses the wrong terminology to correct the error of the first terminology. Taking equal cutting, and to avoid cutting, the equestrian literature digs deeper in the hole talking about releasing, relaxing, stretching. It is all about permanent tension, tensegrity, with numerous nuances.

To be able to do that you need to be still. Advancing the ASIS places the rider in a neutral balance where the body weight is not acting back to front or front to back.

Questions

Thruness

Thruness has nothing to do with speed. It has to do with how the movements go thru the horse. It is the capacity of the horse to properly use the thrust created from the hind legs for balance control, lift, bending and rotation, and convert the thrust it into an upward and a horisontal force. Therefore thruness is about how the horse handels the thrust created by the hind legs with its muscles.

If the horse stiffens the back it can no longer use the force and convert it. Therefore the horse is not thru. It the horse is pushing against the bit with the hind legs it is not thru.

If the horse doesn’t bounce it doesn’t have the correct kinematic, and then the horse is technically lame. Therefore 99 percents of all horses are technically lame…

The bounce is the beginning of forward. Without a bounce you will not have thruness. But the bounce doesn’t mean that the horse is completely thru. When you have a bounce you can start to push the horse more forward. If done properly the thruness will increase. But if the horse speed up from the push, it will get stiff and you will loose the thruness.

In the beginning you need to limit the thrust from the hind legs. If the hind legs are pushing too much the horse will not be able to convert all that thrust. Therefore it is easier for the horse to learn this coordination when the hind legs are pushing very little. When the horse has learned to convert the thrust, you can increase the push from the hind legs and the thrust, and the horse will still be able to convert it. You need to go slow in the beginning, to learn the proper coordination. But you should not go slow your whole life. You go slow to be able to go fast!

In the beginning many horses need a really slow cadens to coordinate. After some time the horse can have a faster cadens and still keep the coordinate. If you go slower than the natural cadens of the horse, the horse need to use more muscle power for the work. You can use that slower cadens to develop the muscular system of the horse. But the horse might get sour in the muscles.

When you are in the right cadens, the horse will work effortless. When the cadens is slower, the horse need to use more muscle power for the work. If the cadens is faster, the horse will stiffen.

The base of the neck and the wither

The laminal ligament of the nuchal ligament is strong. It goes the whole way up to C2. Above that there is only a nuchal ligament, which is very weak.

On the neck, the nuchal ligament is elastic. On the thoracic it is not. It gradually loose its elasticity the further backwards it goes. From T4 to T9 there can be a verticality of the dorsal spine.

When the horse elongate the neck, it is not a stretching. The more the horse lengthen the neck, the more the muscles in the neck (most important Splenius and semispinalis capitis) need to resist the gravitation. The nuchal ligament help the muscles to carry the weight of the head and neck. In walk the nuchal ligament can carry up to 55 percent of the weight. The muscles still carries 45 percent of the neck. That is a resistance and not a stretch. In trot and canter, the nuchal ligament is only carrying 33-37 percent, so then the work from the muscles are bigger.

If the trunk is supported by the muscular system (the serratus and pectoral muscles), the lowering of the neck will create an upward force. But if the neck and head is lowered too much, the trunk will go down instead. The same happens if the horse lengthen the neck without supporting the muscular system.

When the horse activate the serratus and pectoral muscles properly, the aponeurosis will work optimally and help the muscles to lift the trunk. Therefore the muscles doesn’t need to work so hard, since the tendons work more.

What develops the base of the neck the most is the serratus. The muscles above is only lifted by the serratus.

C7-T1

The vet school say that we have an epidemi of arthritis in the cervical vertebra.

Depending on hove we place the neck, there will be stress on the neck and on the cervical vertebras and the attachment of the muscles.

The force goes thru the thoracic spine into the cervical spine. The scalinus should keep the vertebras in line. If the scalinus is weak, the force will instead push the cervical spine to the left or to the right.

When you have contact on the bit you will always have one force going forward into this junction and one force going backward. If they are not completely aligned, they will be pushed to the side.

The outside shoulder

When the horse bend the outside shoulder need to move forward. If the outside shoulder moves backward, you have a restriction. The lift in the outside shoulder comes from the rotation. But when the rotation is correct, it is very little. Therefore the lift in the outside shoulder is almost nothing. When the outside shoulder goes backward, it can be because the thoracic is bent the other way. When the horse has an inverted rotation, the outside shoulder might be both lowered and backward.

Sacroiliac joint

There is cartilage on the pelvic and cartilage on the sacrum. The force from the hind legs need to go thru this joint. Due to the cartilage, the force can go in different direction. There are several strong ligaments stabilising the sacroiliac joint. The movement is very little, 0,8 degrees. But that small movement is important to make it possible to transmit the movement from the force from the hind legs. If the force doesn’t go thru, the force comes back to the joint that become under stress. The reason can be a blockage of the force in another place of the horse.

How do we fix it? You can not manipulate the Sacroiliac joint. Instead you need to find the reason for the stress. It can be overflexing, wrong rotation of the spine or something else. If the spine is not in line, there will be stress on the sacroiliac joint.

When the bone is under stress, the bone build more surface. The bone in the sacroiliac joint will also build more surface. That is how the sacroiliac joint will try to absorb the problem or pain.

If you find what’s wrong in the movement, you will reduce the stress on the sacroiliac joint.

The breaking phase

There is both a breaking phase and a pushing phase in each stride. During the breaking phase the horse resist both gravity and speed. During the breaking phase the legs store elastic energy. During the pushing phase, the elastic energy is lifting both the forehand and the hindquarter of the horse.

The muscles slow down the structure of the knee just before impact, to protect the knee from too much stress.

Rörelserna i ryggraden i bröstryggen skapar även rörelser i bäckenet.

Stabilisera ryggraden i rörelse

Jean Luc demonstrerar hur tensegritet fungerar.

Rotationen är störst just under ryttaren.

Rörelsecentrum i centrum.

Vilka krafter verkar?

Hur ser vertikal obalans ut i överlinjen?

  • Halsens muskler är mest utvecklad på undersidan.
  • Dip bakom manken

Sadelutprovning

Sadelns form jämfört med häst och ryttare:

  • Avstånd mellan framkant och sittpunkt
  • Sittpunkt i förhållande till stigbygelkrampan
  • Midjan på sadeln
  • Bommens form
  • Sätets form längs ryggen på hästen
  • Ryttarens position
  • Ryttarens bäcken kontra sadeln
  • Avståndet framkant djupaste punkt jämfört med häst
  • Vinkel på bommen fram
  • Tryck under stigbygelkrampan

I have been at a Clinic with Jean Luc Cornille at Ledingenäs outside Stockholm. Here comes my notes from the lectures during the clinic. The first day he had a lecture about the equine thoracolumbar spine and the second day about tensegrity. If you find these subjects difficult it might be easier to understand if you first read the notes from the clinic at my place in September this year.

Equine thoracolumbar spine

According to tradition you have been told that the spine swing and the back muscles stretch. New knowledge show that the back and the spine of the horse does not work that way. The traditional riding technic also tells you to ride the horse forward to engage the hind legs more and rebalance the horse with half halts to shift the weight backwards. But this does not really work. No matter how the horse is working the force always goes forward.

The stance phase of the hind legs can be divided into two different parts; the braking phase and the pushing phase. When the horse put down one hind leg he starts by braking (decelerating) with the hind leg. Then the body of the horse moves forward over the hind leg. When the hind leg is behind the vertical it starts to push. The balance in the horse i created by increasing the braking phase of the hind legs instead of moving weight backwards. Also in collection the weight is not really redistributed backwards, instead the hind legs brake more och the chest is lifted more.

Kinematic problems

When the horse is moving, this creates movements in the spine. The range of these movements are actually much smaller than most of us believe. The vertical movements does never exceed 53,1 mm. Although the movements are small, they occur in three different dimensions; laterally (from side to side), vertical (up and down) and rotating. The thoracic spine moves more than the lumbar spine. Often when you have a problem in the lumbar spine, the cause of the problem is actually in the thoracic spine. The movements in the thoracic spine also create a movement in the pelvic. If the horse is moving (bending) the thoracic spine more in one direction than in the other direction, the pelvic will also move more in one direction. That will influence the movements of one hind leg more than the other hind leg. Therefore the kinematic problems in the hind legs most of the times come from the thoracic spine.

All horses will protect the kinematic dysfunction that it has. If the horse has learned to move in a dysfunctional way, it will not change that way by itself. Instead it will try to keep these movements and try to protect the tensions that the movements create.

Stabilising system of the vertebral column during movements

The push from the hind legs always creates a force that goes into the spine of the horse. When the left hind leg is pushing the force goes diagonally forward and to the right and when the right hind leg is pushing the force goes diagonally forward and to the left. Without compensation, the force will just move the spine laterally (to the side) and the horse will start to move from side to side.

The horse has a lot of quite strong back muscles. The bow and string theory tell you that the horse should relax all these back muscles and lengthen them by engaging the stomach muscles. But this is not the purpose of the back muscles. The purpose of the back muscles is to stabilise the spine and protect the spine from movements that are harmful to the spine.

Between the vertebras in the spine there are muscles that are attached diagonally. The multifidus muscles goes diagonally in one direction (from the spinous processes of one vertebra backwards and down to a vertebra 3-4 vertebras further back) and the longissimus muscles goes diagonally in the other direction (from the spinous processes of one vertebra forward and down to a vertebra 3-4 vertebras further back). These muscles must learn to resist the diagonal force from the hind legs in order to keep the stability in the spine and in order to prevent the horse from moving from side to side.

The multifidus and longissimus muscles are the muscles closest to the spine. Above them are several other layers of quite thick muscles. Therefore you can’t influence these muscles by touching them. Instead you must influence them with movements.

The traditional way of looking at the movements of the horse and the function of the muscles is that the muscles either are contracting or decontracting. But that is not the issue. You will not solve the problem of tension by decontracting the muscles. It is instead a matter of coordinating the muscles. If a muscle is under stress, you should not try to decontract it. Instead the horse need to find a better coordination between the muscles, which will release the stress from the muscles.

A main component of muscle elasticity is a filament known as filament titin. Titin (also known as connectin) is a protein that is of great importance for the contraction of muscles. Within the muscle titin functions as serially linked springs that develop tension when stretched. There are multiple titin isoforms (variations) that vary in size and stiffness. This explains the elastic stiffness diversity across vertebrate muscles. Titin has multiple roles in striated muscles ranging from sarcomere assembly to mechanical roles such as providing the forces needed to maintain proper sarcomere integrity during contraction.

Guiding the horse to a proper coordination

There are approximately 344 hyaline-covered articular surfaces in the equine vertebral column. There is a very large elastic-stiffness diversity across vertebrate muscles. There is no chance that the rider will be able to coordinate all the articular surfaces in the spine, all attaching muscles and fascia. Instead this must be the responsibility of the horse. Therefore horse training is not about submission and teaching reaction of aids. It is about guiding the horse to find a good coordination of the back muscles and teach the horse to search for stability, effortlessness and easiness.

This is a new way of training the horse. Instead of putting the horse into a certain frame or shape, you should suggest a certain movement and let the horse try it. In the beginning the horse will fail several times, partly because it will protect the old movements and the tensions in the body. Never punish the horse for failing. Instead you should analyse the movement and suggest a different reaction. After a while the horse will start to find the right coordination for a few steps and then loose it. The more times the horse find the right coordination the more it will start to get the feeling of effortless movements and easiness. Since that feels good for the horse, it will try to return to that feeling and by time the horse will also learn to keep it for longer times.

The front legs of the horse will create a force upward, which creates a backward force in the riders body. The hind legs of the horse will create a forward force, which create a forward force in the riders body. There are therefore a lot of forces acting on the rider. If the rider have to much slackness, the riders body will start swing a lot. Then the horse must protect himself from these movements in the rider and the horse get tensed in the back muscles. A horse with tensed back muscles will start to push more and accelerate.

There is an expression ” Hands without legs and legs without hands”. That is stupid. You should never use the legs without the hands. Your fingers need to be relaxed to be able to feel how the horse is reacting.

Lateral bending and rotation

The rotation can be correct or inverted. With a correct rotation a right bended horse will have a tiny rotation towards the right. With an inverted rotation a right bended horse will rotate to the left. Then the left front leg will be more loaded. All horses are by nature a little crooked. They will then have more tendency to rotate to one direction (with both lateral bendings).

Every single vertebra rotate very little, but in a segment of vertebras the rotation get bigger. Especially this is true for inverted rotation. When the horse rotate correct, the rotation is quite small, but when the horse rotate inverted the rotation become much bigger.

The scientific word for the rotation is named by the direction the ventral part (the part that is facing the ground) of the spine goes to. When you are riding on the horse you feel the movement in the dorsal part (the part facing upwards) of the vertebra. When the dorsal part of the spine rotate to the right the ventral part of cause rotate to the left. In practical riding we call this a right rotation (the dorsal part of the spine is going to the right), but in science this is called a left rotation (the ventral part of the spine is going to the left). This is very confusing. To avoid being confused we continue to name the rotation from the dorsal part of the spine. But if you read a scientific paper you must be aware of the fact that they will instead name the rotation from the ventral part.

Lateral bending occur between T16 and T9 and rotation occur between T14 and T9. Therefore both the lateral bending and the rotation is best controlled by the upper thigh of the rider. You can not do this if you sit on your glute with your knees high. Instead you need to sit on your seat bones with your thigh as vertical as possible. You can never be totally on your seat bones. You will always have some support from both your glute, your seat bones and your upper thigh. But the distribution should be more on the seat bones and less on the glute.

The riders upper thigh is hugging the chest of the horse and that is what will help the horse to find the correct rotation. But the upper thighs are influenced by the back muscles. If the horse is having an inverted rotation and the rider follows this rotation, the rider will get a bending in the spine. Then the rider will not be able to sit straight with the upper thighs. Therefore the rider should never follow an inverted rotation. Instead the rider must keep a straight spine to be able to help the horse to correct an inverted rotation.

There are many ways to correct inverted rotation, but different horses will react differently. One method that works great with one horse will not work with another horse. That’s because the horse will protect the inverted rotation. If one method doesn’t work you must try another one.

Harmonic tensegrity

What is tensegrity?

Tensegrity is not a new concept, but at the same time it is new in the biomechanics of the horse, since we now know more about it.

Engineering explains that the stability of a structural network is determined by

  • The material properties
  • Their arrangement
  • The ”play” (free movement) in the joints that interlink the different elements
  • Stability of the critical joints is often achieved by enlarging the amount of load-bearing material in the critical regions.

When weight is a consideration such as for a bridge, engineers have developed ”prestress” structures such as concrete beam with pre-tensioned steel bars placed in regions to take care of these strains.

Nature created biologic tensegrity placing the joints under tension providing grater strength for less mass. Nature engineered the horse’s legs and whole body for speed and jumping performance finding a way to combine light lower legs with strong propulsive power and capacity to absorb considerable impact forces. That’s why the muscle mass are situated higher up on the upper legs and the body of the horse. In the lower legs the structure consists mostly by tendons and ligaments. They therefore are light in weight, but strong, and can use the elastic energy and be part of the tensegrity in the horse.

Tensegrity, elastic energy, force transport and other engineering marvels have created the horse whose efficiency starts to be understood as never before.

Work with less effort

When the movements of the horse is created by contracting and elongating muscles, every movement takes a lot of energy to perform. If the horse moves in a certain cadence, frequency and coordination he can move in a more effortless way. When the horse discover that, he get interested in working with us. When the reward of the work is comfort, the horse starts to go even beyond what we ask for and maximise the performance in a way that at the same time minimise the effort.

We have to guide the horse in this direction. The horse will not find the right solution right away. But when the horse start to find the effortless way of moving, that will be one of the most powerful rewards you can imagine.

Most of the aids we are using when we are riding is actually punishing the horse. We are kicking the horse in the side or attacking him with the spurs. The horse need to protect himself against this. If we can guide the horse to move in an energy-optimising and more effortless way, we don’t need strong aids and force. Most riders has the dream of riding in a way that they do nothing, that the horse responds to the riders thoughts. What can make this dream come true is the use of tensegrity! When the horse is working with tensegrity, he will feel even the slightest change of muscle tone in the rider. Then the precondition for a good communication will be better balance control and core stability of the rider – not stronger aids!

Jean Luc is demonstrating how tensegrity works. When you touch each other with one finger you can feel the slightest change of muscle tone. But if Jean Luc is tensing a shoulder, his back or turning the head to the side, the tensegrity doesn’t work and then you will no longer feel the changes of tone.

Maximise the elastic energy

Power absorption is usually associated with eccentric contraction and power production is usually produced by concentric contractions. Power absorption can also be caused by elastic energy stored in tendons and ligaments. The subsequent power production originates then from the release of elastic energy instead of concentric muscles contraction.

We need to create a situation where the elastic energy is maximised. That is the only way to create effortless movements. The horse is constructed to bounce upwards. When the horse does not do that, he will only be moving weight from one front leg to the other. That kind of movement will bring lameness to the horse.

Forces can be transported through the limbs and body without power production by the transporting muscles. Power transport can take place during isometric contraction without power production by the transporting muscles. Therefore, no muscle fibers are needed to transport power and tendons can also transport power. Muscles spanning over more than one joint can transport power at one joint and simultaneously produce power at another joint.

Recent ultrasound-based measurements indicate that fascial tissues are commonly used for dynamics energy storage (catapult action) during oscillatory movements, such as walking, jumping or running. The long and stiff tendons in the distal limbs of the horse are able to store substantial amount of elastic energy.

The role of the fascia

A tensegrity structure is characterised by use of continuous tension and local compression. The simple joint is stabilised by continuous balance between tension and compression elements. The traditional thinking is that ligaments and tendons stabilise the joint and the cartilage assure the rotation in the joint. The model is no longer accurate. Cartilages are very thin and could not withstand the intensity of the impact forces during regulate gaits and never the less the landing of a jump.

Fascia, arranges in sleeves, wrap joints and keep bones apart as they flex. Under tension, fascia is strong enough to separate the joints creating a microscopic space protecting the joint.

Tension of the fascia is created by muscles work. Muscles leverage against the fascia to optimise tension for each movement to stabilise and prevent overloading of the joints. Fascia is light but resistant.

The horse will by himself figure out how much muscle work he need to create the right amount of tension for the fascia to function properly. But if the horse has to protect himself (for example from the rider) he will not have the ability to do this.

Stress, tension and injuries

If you go faster than the horse’s natural tempo or frequency, that will create stress on the structures and the horse need to protect himself. Horses create speed by stiffening the spine. Therefore you have to stay in the cadence of the horse.

The energy produced by normal walking would tear all the ligaments in the knee if it was not absorbed by muscular activity that are important for anteroposterior stability in the knee. Eccentric contraction dissipates energy to decelerate the knee immediately before the heel strike. Failure to decelerate the leg can generate forces as large as 65 x body weight.

The sacroiliac joint is a joint with two layers of cartilage. The joint hardly move at all. But the force travel through the joint in different direction. If there are movements in the joint it will be under stress and the horse has to protect it with tension and inflammation.

Communication between the rider and the horse

The traditional view of getting the horse to perform is that the rider use the correct combination of aids and that will make the horse perform the correct movement. In reality the combination of aids will only make the horse protect himself. The real conversation occur on a more sophisticated level. The rider need to use her own posture, tone and tensegrity to influence the horse in a certain way. If the rider start to tense, move, pull on the reins or kick with the legs, this communication will not work, because of the need for the horse to protect himself.

The classical equitation talks about a shift of the riders weight. With the knowledge we have today, we know that the rider must stay neutral the whole time. The rider should never act from back to front or from front to back.

There is an integrity of the whole body that has been completely missed by the equitation of the correct aids. Muscles never work alone and fascia connect the whole muscular system and support muscle function. Most of the length change required for the work of locomotion occurs not in the muscle fibers themselves, but by elastic recoil of the associated tendons and muscles aponeurosis.

The delicacy, the discretion, the finesse advised by the best were an incitation to an equitation of harmonic tensegrity where nuances in muscle tone replace the crude theories of hands, gestures, shifts of the rider weight, kicks of the legs and other coarse actions.

The integrity of the horses physique demands the integrity of the rider’s body.

Not one part acting, as taught by the equitation of the ”correct aids”, but instead the entire body playing with nuances within and overall integrity. ”I believe the true classical masters would embrace this information as a much better explanation of what they felt, but had only the language of their days available to them to use to explain.” – Patricia Cameron

Believes, misconceptions and scientific knowledge

We are no longer at the level of stretching and relaxation or elongating muscles to increase the range of motion. These theories have been the deal for centuries, but tissues do not function as theorised in the book.

We have been trained to believe that release and relaxation were the components of elasticity. Elastic stiffness does not fit our equestrian education for the simple reason that our equestrian education is based on literature instead of science.

Our ancestors explained what they felt and made theories that could explain their feelings. Therefore the classical literature are filled with misconceptions. That does not mean they were bad riders. But they could only explain their riding by the knowledge they had at that time. The concept of tensegrity is a much better explanation for what our ancestors felt.

Tensegrity is the explanation that the best of the best have hinted over centuries. Harmonic tensegrity is the new generation of equine athletic training.

Bakgrund

Elastisk energi – Boing Boing

(The role of the extrinsic thoracic limb muscles in equine locomotion, R.C. Payne, P. Veenman and A.M. Wilson, 2005).

(Machanical Analysis of Locomotion, Liduin S. Meerchoek and Anton J. van den Bogert, 2003)

(Alan M. Wilson, M. Polly McGulgan, Anne Su and Anton J. van den Bogert, 2001)

  • Exentrisk kontraktion: Musklerna längs ut, men håller emot.

(Paul C. LaStayo, John M. Woolf, Michael D. Lewek and Lynn Snydegert, 2003)

Muskler kontraherar progressivt.

I början använder man handen.

Background

Jean Luc has a classical background. He was educated at Cadre Noir de Saumur in France. But he all the time thought that the classical approach was not enough. Therefore he turned into science. The knowledge evolve all the time. Even five years ago we didn’t know what we know today. So we all the time have to question our knowledge and keep searching for new knowledge.

The classical approach are doing many good things, but it is based on old knowledge.

Jean Luc was competing in gymnastics when he was young. One of his trainers was fantastic at analysing a problem (for example landing not straight after a triple volte), finding the source of the problem (unequal strength in the right and left side of his back muscles) and to correct the problem (strengthen the back muscles and make them more even). Jean Luc thought that it must be the same in riding, but probably only at a high level. Then he started grand prix and realised that there was still no analysis like that.

The equestrian world still work like this. Often the horse is blamed for not being able to do a movement or for not wanting to do a movement. Most of the time no one is analysing the kinematic abnormalities. If you instead analyse the movement and find the source of the problem, you can most of the time fix it.

How does it really work?

The biomechanics of the horse

The back muscles

It is the back muscles of the horse that coordinate the movements of the limbs. Therefore the most important thing to get the correct movements or to rehabilitate a horse with a kinematic abnormality is to teach the horse to coordinate the back muscles. And when you ride it is the riders back muscles that influence and control the horses back muscles.

Most vets says that it is the legs of the horse that creates the problems in the back. That is not true. It is actually the back that creates the problems in the legs.

The steps

The stance starts with the breaking (or decelerating) phase. That is an important part of the balance control. After that the pushing phase comes. Since the pushing is partly directed upwards, also the pushing phase is important for the balance control.

During the impact and the breaking phase elastic energy will be stored in the tendons, ligaments and muscles. That elastic energy is reused in the pushing phase, to create an upward push. You need a slow cadence to be able to create this elastic energy and store it during the breaking phase. If you ride to fast the horse will instead just push the weight into the front legs.

Standing still, the front legs of the horse carry about 60 % of the weight. When moving, this increase up to 70-75 % of the weight. Then the front legs can’t propel upwards. Instead the front legs are going backwards. Then the back muscles don’t convert the push from the hind legs into upward force. Instead the push is just loading the front legs.

The force comes from the hind legs oblique (diagonally) and the back muscles will convert this force into a lift in the chest. If you have a horisontal and a vertical force then you need both horisontal and vertical muscles. Or, if you have oblique muscles, like you have closest to the spine, you can create both horisontal and vertical forces.

It is important that the hind legs decelerate the forward push properly to avoid loading the front legs with to much weight. If the hind legs don’t decelerate properly, there will be to much forward push going thru the back, so the back muscles will not be able to convert it into an upward force that lifts the chest. Therefore, to teach the horse to break with the hind legs is a prerequisite for making it possible for the horse to coordinate the back muscles properly.

Bow and string

An old theory from 1946 that says that the abdominal muscles flex the back of the horse. Today we know that it doesn’t work that way. Even though we now have the knowledge, most riders keep on riding due to the bow and string theory.

Straightness

Straightness don’t exist! The horse is never straight! A horse can look straight, but still be crocked.

When the left front leg moves backwards, the thoracolumbar spine bends to the left. When the right hind leg moves forward, the lumbar spine bends to the right. Therefore, the horse will always be more or less in an S-shape. The imbalance comes when the horse bends more to the left or more to the right. Then the rider feels that the horse is pushing him over to the right or the left side. This is because of an imbalance in the back muscles.

The bend of the thoracic spine will influence the shoulders and the pelvis. Therefore also the front legs and the hind legs will be influenced by the bend. When the thoracic spine is crocked, you will automatically have an imbalance also in the legs. When one hip is more forward than the other, one hind leg will go more forward than the other. The hind leg that go to much forward will have to much strain on the upper part of the hook and the hind leg that go to less forward will have to much strain on the lower part of the hook. Therefore, crookedness put to much strain in the joints of both hind legs.

When the horse is crocked he will tell the rider that he can’t do it, but he will not be able to find the solution himself. It’s the responsibility of the rider to analyse the crookedness in the horse and to find the source for it and correct it.

Longitudinal flexion and bending

There is a small movement between the vertebras in the spine in longitudinal flexion and a small movement in lateral bending and in rotation. These movements are not exactly the same, but almost. Therefore the bending and rotation will help to get more longitudinal flexion and the longitudinal flexion will help to get the bending and rotation. So if you for example have a problem with the bending to the right, you can ask for a little more longitudinal flexion and then the bending to the right will be easier.

The seat of the rider

Bending, rotating and balance right and left

How can the rider help the crocked horse? This should be done with the seat! The bending in the thoracic spine occurs between the riders upper thigh. Lateral bending is between T9-T16 and rotation between T9-T14.

The rider need to be totally vertical and the whole body of the rider need to be able to turn a tiny bit to the left or to the right.

The upper thigh should hug the chest of the horse, but not squeeze. The knees should not squeeze either.

In walk and trot, one hind leg pushes while the other hind leg decelerates. The push from the hind leg will create a diagonal force into the back of the horse. The riders back is very important in the process of converting this diagonal force from one hind leg into a forward force. If the rider follow the diagonal force the rider will move to the side. And when the horse push with the other hind leg the rider will move to the other side. Then it will be impossible for the horse to convert the diagonal forces from the hind legs to forward movement and upward force. Therefore it is very important that the rider is resisting this diagonal force with a muscle tone and tensegrity. If the rider is to suppled he will just follow the diagonal forces of the horse. If the rider is contracting the same problem occur.

What we call straightness i not really straight, but it is narrowing the corridor. When the corridor is wide the body of the horse in every step moves right and left. When you narrow the corridor the horse stays in the middle, and the forces go straight.

Balance forward-backwards

The rider must sit with the upper body exactly above the seat bones. If the upper body is behind or in front of the seat bones, you will influence the back of the horse from back to front or from front to back. Then the horse can’t coordinate the longissimus and multifidus muscles. It is only when the rider is totally vertical that the weight of the rider doesn’t influence the back muscles of the horse.

Every movement of the rider is disturbing the horse. You can influence the horse by changing your muscle tone to direct the energy in a particular direction. So you don’t need to use movements in riding. If you are balanced (vertical and with tensegrity) then directing the energy by changing the tone is enough.

Elastic strain energy – Boing Boing

The traditional way of thinking is that the muscles are moving the limbs of the horse and the amplitude of the movement is determined by the extension of the limb movements. This is not really true. One example of this is a small dog with very short legs that are bouncing up in the air several times its own size. The dog is not bending the legs and using the muscles to push itself up in the air.

There is something called elastic energy that can explain this better. Following are quotes from several different scientific studies that together explains how this work.

Does muscles create locomotion?

”Most of the length change required for the work of locomotion, occurs not in the muscle fibers themselves but by elastic recoil of the associated tendons and muscles aponeurosis.”
(The role of the extrinsic thoracic limb muscles in equine locomotion, R.C. Payne, P. Veenman and A.M. Wilson, 2005).

In this study they show that there are not primarily the contraction and decontraction of muscles that creates locomotion. Instead it’s mainly the length change in the tendons and muscles aponeurosis that create locomotion.

Storing and releasing energy – elastic strain energy

”Elastic structures like tendons and ligaments, store energy when elongated. This energy is released when they return to their normal length.”
(Machanical Analysis of Locomotion, Liduin S. Meerchoek and Anton J. van den Bogert, 2003)

”The long and stiff tendons in the distal limbs of horses are able to stor substantial amount of elastic energy.”
(Alexander & Bennet-Clark, 1977)

This scientist is a mathematician who has only studied horses. He was hired by NASA for two years, because they needed to find a way to create maximun movement with minimum energy, and the horse is one of the best animals to do this.

The major advantage of the system is that the lower limbs are very light weight while the joints can still be actively moved and can contribute to the propulsion.

”Apart from the role of tendons and collagen in energy storage, the muscle itself stores and recovers elastic strain energy, as elastic strain energy can occur in the absence of tendons.”
(Paul C. LaStayo)

”Power transport between joints. Muscles spanning over more than one joint, can absorb power at one joint and simultaneously produce power at another joint.”
(Anton van den Bogert)

The digital tendon is an example of a tendon that cover several joints. It can store energy in one part, which is used to produce stability in another end.

”This function of biarticular muscles is referred to as power transport between joints.”
(Gregoire, 1984)

”The muscular work of galloping horses is halved by storing and returning elastic strain energy in spring-like muscle-tendon units.”
(Alan M. Wilson, M. Polly McGulgan, Anne Su and Anton J. van den Bogert, 2001)

”The distal limb of the horse has beed shown to function like a pogo stick, storing and returning energy in long, spring-like tendons throughout the gait cycle.”
(Biewener, 1998, Wilson, 2001)

What does this mean in practice?

It looks like the hind legs should be better suited to create upward force than the front legs, since they can bend more. If the upward force was created by the muscles bending the joints and then straighten them, this would have been true. But this is not how it works. It is the front legs that creates the largest amount of upward force. The upward force is not created by bending the joints. Instead it is created by storing and releasing energy. This is why bouncing animals (horses, dogs and other animals) have almost straight legs.

After impact the hind legs are breaking and in the end of the stance phase they push. The hind legs are actually only creating 43 % of the upward force and the front legs are creating 57 % of the upward force (H.W. Merkens, H.C. Schamhardt, G.J van Osch and Anton J. van den Bogert, 1993). In a good piaffe the hind legs are breaking much more, to keep the weight of the front legs. Then the hind legs are only creating around 20 % of the upward force and the front legs are creating around 80 % of the upward force. So, in piaffe, the horse is actually not moving the weight from the front legs to the hind legs. Instead it is the breaking phase of the hind legs that increases and the pushing phase that decreases. so instead of a weight change, it is a change in forces that occur when the horse collects.

If the hind legs are pushing to much weight onto the front legs (like when the horse is going to fast), then the load on the front legs will be to high and the front legs can no longer propel upwards. Instead the front legs will just be just pushing the weight from one front leg to the other.

The thing that makes it difficult to sit in the trot is the breaking phase of the front legs. If the front legs break to much it is because they carry to much weight. Therefore the hind legs must break more (instead of the front legs) to get a more comfortable trot.

When you ride you feel a lot of movements, but the spine of the horse can only move 53,1 mm. What you feel is instead the push from the legs. The hind legs are pushing the riders spine diagonally forward and the front legs are pushing the spine of the rider backwards. What the rider feel is the sum of the movements of the spine and the legs. Therefore the rider need to resist the movements of the pushing legs by not allow this movement in the riders spine. Then the rider can start to match the movements in the horse and then the horse can start to follow the rider.

The force by the hind legs and the front legs meet at one point in the spine of the horse. This is where the rider should sit. That is the point where the movements are smallest.

Every movement in the rider that exceed the movement in the spine of the horse, will make it impossible for the back muscles of the horse to work properly. Therefore it is important that the rider sit exactly at the point where the force by the hind legs and the front legs meet and that the rider resist the movements of the pushing legs in the spine. Otherwise it will be impossible for the back muscles of the horse to work properly.

Optimising the energy needed for movements

”The elastic energy stored in and recovered from tendons during cyclical locomotion can reduce the metabolic cost of locomotion.”
(Cavagna, 1977, Alexander, 1988, Roberts, 1997)

As you can see, there are several different studies that show that movements can be created in more energy saving ways. Horses are flight animals. They are designed to be able to run very fast without using so much energy. Thats why they have so long tendons. The tendons can therefore store more elastic energy that can create more movements.

  • Eccentric contraction: The muscles are lengthened, but resist. This is a very strong force.
  • Concentric contraction: The muscles are shortened. This takes a lot of energy, but does not give much force.

Power absorption is usually associated with eccentric contraction and power production is usually produced by concentric contraction. Power absorption can also be caused by elastic energy stored in tendons and ligaments. The subsequent power production originates then from the release of elastic energy instead of concentric muscles contraction.

Impact force are absorbed by eccentric contraction. This create elastic energy that is stored in tendons and aponeurosis. When pushing the horse is using concentric contraction. If they have stored enough elastic energy from the eccentric contraction, they don’t need to use so much energy for concentric contraction to create the movement. When the horse realise that the movement can be effortless, the horse get interested in the work.

”The ability of the muscle-tendon units to recover elastic strain energy is apparently energetically so advantageous that the most economical stride frequency in running may be set by this key component alone.”
(Paul C. LaStayo, John M. Woolf, Michael D. Lewek and Lynn Snydegert, 2003)

The balance between decelerating and pushing with the hind legs and the frequency of the strides are key components for energy optimisation movements. Every horse has a window of cadens (an interval of stride frequency) where energy optimisation is possible. With training you can start to widen this window a little.

”Create lightness, prepare the body for the movement, request, let the horse execute the movement, criticise.” (Beudant) This should all the time be the way to work the horse. To execute a movement is not the difficult thing. The difficult thing is to prepare the horse properly for the movement. If the horse is properly prepared, you don’t need to add so many aids while executing the movement.

Inside the Bicept bracci there is a tendon. During the stance there is a tension of the tendons that will maximise the swing. This is called the catapult mechanism. Muscles contract progressively. The tension of the tendon can therefore create a faster and larger swing. One practical example of this is when you go from a half pass and rebend the horse to go straight. In the half pass the bicept bracci both stabilise the shoulder and move the limb forward. When going straight the bicept bracci only move the limb forward. During the first few strides of going straight you can keep both these functions, which will create extra lift and energy, like a catapult.

Work in hand

The work in hand is a perfect way of working with the brain and intelligence of the horse. Even thought we are not sitting on the horse, when we walk beside the horse he will react on the tone in the humans body.

The work in hand is also a perfect tool to influence on the way the spine of the horse is working. Therefore it is a good tool for rehabilitating a horse or a good way to start educating a new horse. In this way you can teach the horse how to convert forward push into upward push before it need to carry the rider.

The thing that the rider need to learn is to increase the decelerating phase with the hind legs. When the horse do that he become light in the forehand. When you can do this the horse is ready to trot in hand.

With the young horse you will work in hand i walk for a couple of months before the horse is ready to do the same work in trot and eventually also in canter. Therefore you also work the young horse on the lounge. Because there you can work with all gaits. The riding will be much easier when you have already educated the horse in hand.

You can chose to always be on the left side or on the right side or to change sides. No matter which side you are on, you will sometimes be on the inside and sometimes on the outside, since you sometimes turn left and sometimes right.

In the beginning you are using the hand. You straight your body, and when the horse doesn’t react you use the reins to stop the horse. When you have repeated this several times, the horse will start to slow down (or stop) when you straighten your body. Then you don’t need to use your hand as much. So, just in the same way as in riding, you are using your tensegrity to control the cadens of the horse. This works because the horse has a very high degree of perception.

To avoid pulling on the reins Jean Luc prefer that you take the reins from beneath into your hand (then you will not be strong enough to pull on them). The horse need to learn to be light, because in this position you will not have much strength. The hand need to stay still. To be able to keep it still you rest your arm on the saddle. If you are on the left side and you want to turn right, you place the poll to the right and you place yourself further in front of the shoulder and turn right. To turn left you place the poll to the left and you place yourself closer to the saddle. When you teach the halt you can place yourself in front of the shoulder.

You should not do this with a bitless bridle. To have a pressure on skin with bone under is more painful to the horse than to have pressure on soft tissue like the tongue. Therefore you should always use a bit. In the beginning you use a snaffle, but when the horse is more advanced it is better to use the double bridle. Then you just let the snaffle reins hang and use only the curb rein. The curb is straight and therefore it is easier to place the poll more precise with the curb than with the snaffle. Jean Luc never use a cavesson, because it is not as precise as a bit. The cavesson is not stable enough. It is moving a little on the head and then you loose the precision.

Jean Luc doesn’t do long reining. The main reason is that the horse will shorten the neck. The second reason is that it is very difficult to influence the back of the horse when you are so far from this area. You can influence on the mouth through the reins and you can influence the hind legs through your position. But you can not influence the back.

  • Fryser fast
  • Svår att få kontakt med
  • Hård muskulatur
  • Bajsar ofta
  • Svarar med snabba rörelser

Den agerande hästen karaktäriseras av:

  • Sover
  • Äter
  • Vilar på ett bakben
  • Har hängande svans
  • Har avspänd muskulatur
  • Har lätt för att stå still
  • Svarar med långsamma rörelser

Snabba reaktioner

Gå i form

  • Böjning: Man måste kunna runda hästen runt sticken
  • Energi: Man måste kunna aktivera framför allt inner bak och be hästen ta i

Trav i position 2.

5. Positionsbyten

Frihetsdressyr i ridningen

  • Balanssits
  • Stolsits
Man sitter ännu mer bakåt i sitsen och känner bara hästens bakben.

Sticken

Momenten i hästens steg

Gymnastisera lederna i hästens bakben
